April Forestry Report

April 29, 2023

Greetings!

We are on a three-year schedule (per our CC&Rs, 5.3 (b)) to have our forest reviewed by our Professional Forester, Bruce Seybold, for the forest’s health and recommendations. I’ve contacted Bruce about this and we’ll set a date in the summer to walk with him around the forest and hear his suggestions. He’ll then prepare a report for us which we’ll post on our website. I will let everyone know when this will be so that anyone who is interested can walk with Bruce.

I’ve spoken with the Tahoe Conservancy about our creek. The creek looks tangled and messy and concerns have been expressed about flammability. As you may recall, the work paid for by the Conservancy didn’t include areas within 100′ of our units as those are our responsibility for defensible space. Jason Pollard, Forestry Management Planning Specialist, and I spoke in February about the Association’s concerns. He told me that our creek more closely resembles a “natural creek,” something we’ve never really seen. He recommended cutting dead material back (such as willow branches) but noted that willow has a tendency to grow back. Jason also pointed out that the creek is a “high moisture area” so it’s less likely to be a fire concern. Since people often comment about how the Angora Creek “wicked” the fire at South Lake Tahoe, Jason notes that the Angora Creek was choked with dead lodgepole pines due to bark beetle infestation, very unlike our creek.

I shared this information earlier with George who commented that we have pools of mosquitoes in the area due to standing water in the creek.

Diane will be attending an event on behalf of the Association in May.

Finally, I will be scheduling a rake-off for the homeowners for late June or early July on a weekday.
