Forestry Committee

Committee:

Forestry

What We Do:
The Forestry Committee assists the board with monitoring and improving the health of the forest on the Carnelian Wood property. This includes organizing the annual rake-off event, participating in community events such as representing Carnelian Woods at the Fire Adapted Communities at the Lake Tahoe Summit in 2022, and reviewing solutions to improve forest health in the community. In 2022, Carnelian Woods property participated in a Tahoe Conservancy funded fuel reduction program to restore natural forest density and clear collected underbrush. The debris from the cleanup is currently piled and expected to be burned during the 2023/2024 winter and 2024/25. The fuel reduction will likely need to be repeated in about 10 years.

Every three years Carnelian Woods, per our CC&Rs, 5.3 (b), has our forest reviewed by a Registered Professional Forester to assess the forests health and make recommendations. The next review will be made in 2026.

One benefit of the committee’s work is that in 2018 Carnelian Woods became the first community in the Lake Tahoe Basin to achieve the designation Firewise Community and it has renewed this designation every year since. This designation increases the fire safety of our property in a wildfire environment, and consequently can reduce insurance premiums.
