July Forestry Report

July 23, 2024

Nevada Conservation District Staff is interested in exploring options for treating/restoring the creek running through our property, Carnelian Creek. They had no luck looking for grant funds but they’ll get back to us with ideas for what to do for a treatment plan. The creek is generally healthy, but is clogged in places with plant debris and the aging bridges block the water flow so as to divert the natural course of the creek.

The Defensible Space Inspection from North Tahoe Fire was received last week. The purpose of the inspection is to bring STRs up to requirements for reducing fire risk, but is also a requirement for non-rentals. The document is helpful for the entire association as it tells us what needs to be done around all of our units (raking, removing dead trees, etc.).  The work needs to be done for our Firewise renewal. In addition to raking, we have flammable brush that needs to be cut back in every building area, logs/stumps to be removed, branches removed within 10 feet of chimney/stove pipe, some dead and dying trees, etc. See the posting here and others in the document section of the Forestry Committee page.

Pile burning is not yet completed from the work by the North-Tahoe-Fire-led crews two summers ago. North Tahoe Fire anticipates burning these piles when weather conditions are good this fall/winter.

On July 10th there was a 50’x50′ fire at the upper end of Sahara. There are some pictures on our website and also on the North Tahoe Fire Protection District’s Facebook page. Looking at property maps, the fire appears to have been just off Carnelian Woods property and on California Tahoe Conservancy property. As of today, no cause of the fire has been determined.

The annual Rake-off occurred on Friday, July 12th.  Many thanks to Kathy #154, Denise and Larry #139, Paul and Judy #65 and Linda #72 and 129 for raking around units 120-135. Collectively we put in 21 hours of time! People can still borrow rakes and gloves from the office to do more raking. Please keep track of the time you spend (We need this information for our Firewise recertification) and let our office know where needles need to be picked up.
